If you are planning a fishing trip to Finland, one of the first things you'll need to take care of is obtaining a fishing license.
In this article, we will discuss everything you need to know about fishing permits in Finland, from where to buy them to how much they cost.
Yes, you need to pay the fishing management fee (license or permit in other words) if you are aged between 18 and 69!
Exeptions when you can go fishing for free:
- ice-fishing with 1 rod;
- fishing with a rod without reel (basic worm fishing).
Fishermen aged under 18 or over 69 don't need a licence.
However, in order to fish on private lakes with plant fish or rapids/streams, fisherman of any age always need a paid permit from the owner.
The cost of a fishing license in Finland varies depending on the type of license and the duration of the license.
Generally, a one-day license costs 6€, while a week-long license cost 16€.
For longer stays, an annual license may be a better option, costing 47€/calendar year.
Additionally, there may be separate fees for certain private lakes and rapinds, so it's important to check the specific regulations in the area you plan to fish.
Payment is personal.
The state fishery management fee can be paid in online store at verkkokauppa.eraluvat.fi:
Local authorities can prohibit or limit fishing in a limited area for a limited period of time, an important spawning area of a fish species or based on a similar reason. Such prohibitions or restrictions can be verified before fishing from the fishing electronic transaction service kasultusrajoitus.fi.
Fishing licenses are necessary in Finland to protect fish populations and ensure sustainable fishing practices. By regulating the number of people fishing in a given area and the methods they use, the government can ensure that fish populations remain healthy and abundant for future generations.
Revenue from sold fishing permits is used to help maintain fish stocks. This means that the fisheries management fee you pay are investments into nature. Additionally, fishing licenses help fund conservation efforts and support local communities.
Fishing is permitted almost everywhere in Finland for both locals and tourists: in most lakes, rivers and sea areas.
Before you start fishing, do not forget to make sure that the water area is not closed for fishing. The Kalastusrajoitus.fi website has a map showing all no-fishing and restricted areas where you need a fishing permit in addition to the fishery management fee. This service is only available in Finnish and Swedish.
