Frequently asked questions

  • How far in advance should you book a fishing trip?

The most popular fishing seasons in Finland are May, the first half of June, September, and October.

Top locations for these periods are often booked 5-6 months in advance, and some anglers even reserve their favorite spots a year ahead, right after their trip ends.

Summer is also peak holiday season in Finland, which means June (late), July, and August can be fully booked as early as January-February.

Our tip: If you want a great lakeside cottage and a well-equipped boat during the best fishing periods - plan early. The closer to your travel date, the fewer the options and the higher the prices.

  • Do fishing tours or guides guarantee a catch?

No - and that’s the honest answer.

Fishing in Finland means real, wild nature, not a stocked pond. Even on the most productive lakes, there are days when fish just aren’t active.

That said, several key factors greatly increase your chances of a successful catch:

    • Choosing the right lake and season
    • Local knowledge: proven spots, timing, and techniques
    • A quality boat with fishfinder, GPS, and trolling motor
    • A guide’s help — even just for the first day

We do everything to put you “on the fish”, but real fishing always includes a bit of luck and unpredictability. That’s part of the thrill.

  • What’s the best group size for a fishing tour?

The ideal group sizes are 2, 4, or 6 people. This works well for:

    • Accommodation - most fishing cottages are designed for 2–6 guests or have 2–3 bedrooms.
    • Boats - perfect for 2 anglers per boat for comfort and efficiency.
    • Guided fishing - most guides take a maximum of 4 guests per boat.

For larger groups, we can arrange a big house or multiple cottages close together.

  • Do I need to arrange anything in advance besides the cottage and the boat?

Yes, there are a few important things to arrange beforehand:

    • Fishing license (we can help you get it)
    • If you plan to bring your own motor, make sure it is allowed
    • Take care of insurance (regular travel insurance is usually sufficient)
  • Can I organize fishing in Finland independently, or do I have to buy a tour?

Yes, you can definitely organize everything on your own: book a cottage, buy a fishing license. Most cottages usually come with a rowboat, which is enough for casual fishing just for fun.

However, it’s important to keep in mind:

    • Not every waterbody has predators like pike or zander
    • Not all cottages are conveniently located for fishing
    • Without local experience, you might lose several days without a catch

A tour package doesn’t guarantee a catch but reduces risks: proven fishing spots, the right boat, help with licenses, and tips on where to fish. This is especially valuable if it’s your first time or you expect good results.

  • Do I need a boat licence in Finland?

No boat licence required for recreational use. We provide a briefing on the boat and water area at the start of every stay.

  • Can I come for a weekend, not a full week?

3-5 night stays are available. In peak summer (July-August) most cottages have a 7-night minimum. Ask us for guided short stays.
