SEASONAL ADVANTAGE

Why May, not autumn?

Both seasons produce fish. But for maximum catch numbers, longer days, and calmer conditions - May wins. Here's the honest comparison.

RECOMMENDED
May
★ Our top recommendation
Post-spawn feeding frenzy. Pike concentrate on shallow shorelines, easy to find, aggressively feeding.
10-20 pike per day realistic. Highest catch rates of the year.
10-12 hours on the water. White nights begin in May - fishing at 22:00 if nessesary.
Predictable weather. Storms are rare. You get on the water every day.
Trophy potential high. Large females near-shore after spawn. Metre-plus fish are a realistic target.
Autumn
Active - good for big fish
Trophy month. October statistically produces the largest fish of the season in archipelago waters.
Storm risk is real. Autumn winds can cost you 2-3 fishing days per trip.
Shorter daylight. 7-9 hours in October. Fewer fishing hours per day.
Fewer fish, bigger fish. Catch rates are lower, but the ones you land can be exceptional.
More demanding conditions. Cold, rain, wind, low light. Experienced anglers preferred.

"The last week of April and first half of May is the best window for pike fishing in the Finnish Southern Archipelago. Post-spawn fish are shallow, hungry, and concentrated at the shorelines. You don't need to search - you need to cover the water methodically."

Frequently asked questions

  • Why is May specifically the best month for pike in Finland?

Pike are in post-spawn mode throughout May, concentrated along shallow shorelines and reed edges where water warms fastest. They are easy to locate and aggressively feeding to recover energy. The daylight window extends to 10-12 hours in Finland (midnight sun natural phenomenon). Weather in May is predictably calm unlike autumn when storms can limit days on the water.

  • Is 10-30 pike per day a realistic number, or marketing?

This is based on documented catches on this specific water during late April and May. It is the upper end of what active anglers achieve on good days. On slower days you'll land fewer. The key variables are angler experience and patience, weather, and water temperature. We don't guarantee numbers. We guarantee you'll be on water that has produced these results, with people who know how to put you on fish.

  • Is catching a metre-plus pike here realistic here?

No guide or fisherman can guarantee a trophy fish, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. Fish are a natural phenomenon, not a managed product. That unpredictability is precisely what makes fishing worth doing. A guaranteed catch would feel like a stocked pond by lunchtime.

What we can tell you is this: over the past five open-water seasons, anglers on this water have landed pike over a metre consistently - roughly 5 to 10 fish each spring and autumn. Not every angler, not every trip. But the fish are there, they have been caught here repeatedly, and May is when the largest females are closest to shore.

You come here with a realistic chance. What you do with it is between you and the fish.

  • Can beginners join, or is this for experienced anglers only?

Beginners are very welcome and in some ways, May is actually the ideal time for first-timers. Post-spawn pike are concentrated in shallow water close to shore, feeding actively and not particularly selective. You don't need advanced technique to find fish. You need to be in the right place, which is what we're here for.

This is also a genuinely good destination for a father and son trip. Smaller pike are plentiful and aggressive in May - the kind of fishing where you get real action, real catches, and visible results early in the trip. That matters when you're fishing with someone who's still building their feel for it. Nothing kills motivation faster than two blank days at the start. That's not what happens here.

On arrival you'll get a full boat briefing, go out with the guide for your first session, and receive hands-on instruction with lures and technique on the water. By day two most beginners are fishing independently and catching fish.

  • What is a fishing camp and how is it different from simply renting a cottage?

A fishing camp is a setup where several groups fish the same water at the same time without getting in each other's way. The key difference from a standard cottage rental is that a local fisherman is on site throughout - handling all the logistics: boat handover and briefing, technical maintenance, fuel, help with route planning and spot selection. For beginners, he's there on the water to help with technique and tackle from day one.

This is especially useful if it's your first time in Finland or you're fishing unfamiliar water - no need to spend the first days figuring things out. You arrive and fish.

Tell us your group size and preferred dates - we'll confirm availability.

  • How do I get to the location from Helsinki?

Helsinki-Vantaa Airport is approximately 120 km away, about 1.5 hours by rental car. Turku Airport is a similar distance from the other direction.

Car hire is the most flexible option and we can provide directions on booking confirmation.

The drive itself is worth mentioning. As you approach the camp, the road takes you through the Finnish archipelago - islands, straits, pine forest down to the water. The final stretch includes a short free car ferry crossing, about 10 minutes, that takes you across to the island. It runs continuously and needs no booking. It's a small thing, but it sets the tone: by the time you arrive, you already feel like you're somewhere genuinely remote. The journey to the camp is the first sign that you've left ordinary life behind.
